Understand the layers behind a steel product.
Steelmaking inputs, product processing and delivery conditions explain different cost exposures. This page separates those mechanisms without assigning invented cost shares.
Start with the production route.
BF–BOF and EAF use different input routes. Rolling, heat treatment and finishing follow the melt. A scrap index or a finished-steel index therefore represents only part of the picture; subtracting them does not measure a producer’s margin.

Separate the cost exposures.
| Layer | What it explains | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Metallic input and energy | Ironmaking and steelmaking expose BF–BOF and EAF routes to different inputs. A route diagram identifies those inputs; it does not establish a universal cost weight. | AISI · Steel Production |
| Rolling and heat treatment | Pickling, cold reduction, annealing and delivery condition add different processing steps. HRC and HRPO differ from CRC even where the chemistry is similar. | Hyundai Steel · Cold-rolled steel — PO / CR / GI / GA / EG |
| Coating and finishing | EGI uses electroplating; GI hot dipping; GA an additional alloying treatment. Coating basis and substrate matter. Paint systems introduce another distinct finishing layer. | International Zinc Association / GalvInfo · Galvanizing — 2022 |
| Stainless pricing mechanism | Outokumpu describes a base component, extras and alloy surcharge. Treat this as that producer’s pricing framework; regional and contractual terms determine applicability. It is not a universal surcharge or a current amount. | Outokumpu · Stainless steel types |
No numerical allocation or relative price ranking is implied. Product detail belongs in Materials & routes; import measures belong in Trade & tariffs. No Steel cost calculator is claimed.
Keep the indicator and the product separate.
The available BLS series cover defined market baskets. The cold-rolled series is not an EGI, GA or STS price. The hot-rolled bars, plates and structural-shapes series is not an HRC coil benchmark. Read the series scope before using the monthly movement.
